Magnesium is a cofactor in more than 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, and its role in nervous system function is one of the better-substantiated stories in nutritional science — genuinely established at the level of EU-authorized health claims, with real mechanistic biology behind the claims.
The claims that are actually authorized
Under EU Regulation 432/2012, magnesium carries several authorized health claims directly relevant to nervous system and psychological function, all requiring the food to be at least a “source of magnesium”:
- Magnesium contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system
- Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function
- Magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue
- Magnesium contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism
- Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function
- Magnesium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth
Worth being precise here: a broader “hormonal health” claim was evaluated by EFSA alongside these but was not among those that received authorization — the authorized ground is specifically the nervous-system, psychological-function, and fatigue claims above, not a general hormonal-balance statement.
The mechanism behind the nervous-system claim
Magnesium’s role here isn’t just a correlation — it has a genuine, well-characterized mechanism. Magnesium modulates NMDA receptor activity and promotes GABAergic neurotransmission, two pathways directly involved in calming neuronal excitability and maintaining nervous system balance. This mechanistic grounding is part of why the “normal psychological function” and “normal nervous system function” claims cleared EFSA’s evidentiary bar — it’s real, established neurobiology, not a speculative association.
What’s well-documented about magnesium status and stress
Beyond the authorized claims themselves, there’s a legitimate and actively studied relationship between magnesium status and the body’s stress response. A 2020 review in Nutrientsdescribes what researchers call a “vicious circle” between magnesium and stress: physiological stress increases magnesium excretion and utilization, while low magnesium status can itself heighten the body’s sensitivity to stress — a two-way relationship rather than a one-directional cause and effect.4 Separately, research on magnesium in the central nervous system has documented associations between magnesium deficiency and conditions involving dysregulated stress response, including elevated post-stress cortisol patterns in specific populations.5
Where the evidence is genuinely still developing
In the interest of precision: the general nervous-system and psychological-function claims are authorized and well-supported, but more specific claims — such as magnesium supplementation directly reducing anxiety symptoms or improving sleep — rest on a thinner and more heterogeneous evidence base. A systematic review focused specifically on magnesium and subjective anxiety found signals suggestive of a benefit, but also noted considerable variability in study quality across the existing research.6That’s a fair and honest characterization: the foundational nervous-system biology is solid, while the more specific “reduces my anxiety” or “helps me sleep” claims are plausible extensions of that biology that the current evidence doesn’t yet support as strongly or as specifically as the authorized claims themselves.

Magnesium’s connection to nervous system function and stress physiology rests on genuinely solid ground: multiple EU-authorized claims, a real and well-understood neurological mechanism, and an active, legitimate research area studying the two-way relationship between magnesium status and stress. Correcting an actual magnesium shortfall is a reasonable, well-supported way to support normal nervous system function and reduce fatigue — magnesium isn’t a sedative or an anxiety treatment, but the biology behind why it matters for a well-functioning nervous system is genuinely well established.
