What is Lion's Mane
Lion's Mane mushroom is a medicinal fungus native to Asia, North America, and Europe. It grows on hardwood trees and has a distinctive white, cascading appearance resembling a lion's mane (hence the name). The fruiting body contains bioactive compounds, primarily β-glucans and hericenones, that cross the blood-brain barrier and stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF) production.
Mechanism: NGF production and neuronal growth
NGF is a signaling protein that promotes the growth, survival, and differentiation of neurons. In the brain, NGF is produced primarily by astrocytes (support cells) and is taken up by neurons via TrkA and p75NTR receptors. What is Citicoline
Citicoline (cytidine 5'-diphosphocholine, CDP-choline) is a precursor to phosphatidylcholine, a major structural component of cell membranes, particularly myelin (the insulation around neuron axons).
Mechanism: Phosphatidylcholine synthesis and membrane repair
When ingested, citicoline is hydrolyzed into cytidine and choline. Both are absorbed separately and cross the blood-brain barrier.
