Betaine — also marketed as trimethylglycine, or TMG — has exactly one authorized health claim in the EU, and it's a narrow, single-purpose one. What makes betaine's authorization worth its own explainer isn't the claim wording itself, which is simple, but a second condition attached to it that most TMG products on the market don't actually display.
The one authorized claim, and its dose condition
Under Commission Regulation (EU) 432/2012, the authorized claim is: “Betaine contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism.”12 The claim may only be used for food containing at least 500 mg of betaine per quantified portion, and to bear the claim, the consumer must be told that the beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 1.5 g of betaine.12 That's a two-part condition: a per-portion minimum content, and a stated total daily intake needed for the effect described.
The condition that's easy to miss: the cholesterol warning
Here's the part of the authorization that a genuine compliance read catches and a surface-level one doesn't: the same regulation requires that consumers be informed that a daily intake in excess of 4 g may significantly increase blood cholesterol levels.12 This isn't an optional caution — it's part of the authorized conditions of use for the claim itself, the same way the 1.5 g effective-dose statement is. A product carrying the homocysteine claim without also carrying this warning is using an incomplete version of the authorization, not a simplified one.
This matters practically for dosing decisions too: the effective range (1.5 g/day) and the caution threshold (4 g/day) leave meaningful room, but formulations built toward the higher end of typical supplemental ranges — some products go up to 2 g/day, and studies on stronger homocysteine-lowering effects have used considerably more — should treat 4 g/day as a hard ceiling for the claim's own stated safety condition, not a target.3
Why this is more than a labeling technicality
Betaine's homocysteine claim is also relevant beyond its own supplement category — it's a methylation-cycle nutrient increasingly discussed alongside longevity-focused compounds like NAD+ precursors, given the shared involvement of methyl-group metabolism. That makes the claim genuinely useful for framing betaine's role in a broader formulation. But it also means the claim needs to be used precisely: “supports methylation” or “supports healthy homocysteine levels” as loose paraphrases drift from the exact authorized wording, and any framing that implies correction of an elevated or clinically abnormal homocysteine level — rather than “normal… metabolism” in the general population — moves toward the same medicinal-by-presentation risk covered elsewhere.4
The practical takeaway
Betaine's authorization is simple but has two parts most brands only display one of. A compliant claim needs all three: (1) at least 500 mg betaine per portion, (2) the 1.5 g/day effective-dose statement, and (3) the ≥4 g/day cholesterol caution. Not just the first two.
